“The next song that I’m gonna sing for you,” she said, “is one of my favorite worship songs that has gotten me through some of those awkward, weird times, frustrating, not knowing how life works.” The biggest surprise on the cover front was a worship song titled “Transfiguration” by Hillsong Worship. There's a definite EDM flavor to her recent work and it plays to her strengths as a singer. She chose wisely from “Stars Dance,” her solo debut, performing “Come & Get It” and the tempo-shifting “Slow Down.” That left time for covering the Eurythmics hit "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" and a moody reinvention of the Lesley Gore song “You Don’t Own Me,” the latter of which provided the soundtrack to some particularly steamy footage of the singer.Īnd surprisingly enough, she brought the concert to a climax by revisiting her guest spot on the Zedd song, “I Want You to Know," which was great.
She opened and closed with “Revival” and made her way through such obvious highlights as a very funky “Same Old Love,” with her dancers in masks an emotional “Sober,” “Good for You,” “Hands to Myself” and an uplifting “Kill Em With Kindness,” which she set up with a heartfelt plea for people to be nicer to each other in these hate-filled times. The set leaned heavily on new material, even dipping into bonus tracks. And the transformation from the family-friendly Disney Channel icon who fronted the Scene at the Arizona State Fair in 2010 to the Gomez who led a crew of dancers through steamy renditions of “Hands to Myself” and a new song titled “Feel Me” in a set that found her screening sexy footage of herself while changing from one grown-up costume to another was as striking as intended.Īs Gomez announced in the opening line of the opening song of Tuesday’s set, “I dive into the future / But I'm blinded by the sun / I'm reborn in every moment / So who knows what I'll become.” At 23, she’s clearly focused on that dive into the future, asserting herself as the independent woman she’s becoming while keeping the parts of her career that made her such a teen sensation at an arm’s length.
